KANGER®

Green Trump Card in Your Hand

KANGER® is registered as an auxiliary herbal product. Its beneficial side effects include the action of bacterial metabolites against fungal pathogens. This product contains living bacteria of the species Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (strain FV08-10 in the Culture Collection of Microorganisms Brno; proprietary to MONAS Technology s.r.o.), which have been shown to produce a number of plant health promoting substances, including these with antifungal effects. In the case of apple orchards, the application is particularly suitable for the treatment of fungal diseases such as powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha) and apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), both on the leaves and the fruits.

Mode of action

KANGER® consists of a cultivation medium containing bacteria in their encysted form (larger proportion), active bacterial cells, and a mixture of their metabolic products. While the active cells and metabolites guarantee a rapid onset of positive effects, the presence of bacterial spores ensures the durability of the product, as well as its continuous action following the application.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens contained in the product belongs to the rhizosphere Gram-positive bacteria, for which the soil near the plant roots represents their primary habitat. Nevertheless, it also thrives on leaves and fruits, where it preferentially colonises the furrows lining the epidermal cells, and it prospers especially in times of increased humidity. As such, it is a contact antagonist of pathogenic fungi, which enter the plant bodies through the furrows in their skin, and are most active when wet. The overall effect is preventive in that bacterial cells occupy space that would otherwise be used by fungal spores for their own germination.

Whether we are talking about compounds contained in the medium, substances produced by the bacteria after application, or preventive action based on competition for space, in all cases the growth of the mycelium of pathogenic fungi is inhibited and the development of their spores is suppressed.


Biological product (not only) for organic farming

KANGER® can be used both in conventional orchards and in integrated production, where the permitted amount of chemical residues is extremely limited. With legislation pushing for chemical restrictions, this product offers means of anti-fungal protection even for more sensitive apple varieties, for which the current situation is not very favourable. KANGER® is perfectly suited to organic production, for which it is also registered.

APPLICATION WINDOW • Fungal pathogens attack apple trees throughout the season. Therefore, it is advisable to apply KANGER® at any time, from pinktip until harvest. The Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI) for KANGER® is only one day.

The terms and conditions of application

In organic production, the KANGER® is sprayed up to 10 times during the season. The frequency depends on the weather conditions and the number of applications follows the same rules as for conventional products. Since the main role of the product is preventive, it is advisable to monitor the development of the pathogen at the site and adjust the frequency of application accordingly.

In conventional production, KANGER® is of increased importance later in the season (before harvest), when the accumulation of chemical residues is particularly undesirable. Its application makes it possible to reduce chemical inputs while still protecting apple trees from fungal pathogens.

Evaluating the efficacy of KANGER® against the powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha) in apples

The experiments were conducted in 2018 (VÚO site Holovousy), and in 2019 (Holovousy + Ekovín Lednice), monitoring predominantly the powdery mildew on leaves, and to a lesser extent also on fruits (Lednice). In all cases, the measured efficacy was plotted against the 0% control (= baseline infection rate, zero recovery) and compared with a penconazole-based fungicide (Topas 100EC). Although the impact of KANGER® was not as pronounced as that of the conventional chemical preparation, in all cases its positive effect was statistically conclusive, there being no accumulation of undesirable residues.













The first 5 applications were conducted with chemical preparations according to the usual sequence, the next 6 applications were carried out only in the individual variants KANGER vs. Topas vs. untreated.

Testing the efficacy of KANGER® against the apple scab disease (Venturia inaequalis)

In 2019, we have monitored the efficacy of KANGER® against the apple scab disease at VÚO Holovousy and Ekovín Lednice, both on leaves and fruits. As in the case of downy mildew, the control was represented by untreated trees (baseline 0%) and KANGER® was benchmarked against the systemic fungicide Topas 100EC. In all cases, the application of KANGER® resulted in a significant improvement in the health of the trees. At the Holovousy site, this effect was even statistically indistinguishable from that of the chemical product.
